Procedure: Teacher (T) checks homework first. Ss read their homework and correct it if necessary.

Activity 2 – Lead-in
General competence: comprehension of what the written form means in context
Specific competence: to make predictions about the ideas in the text
Method: discussion
Procedure: Ss are asked to make predictions about the ideas contained in the text and they have to write down their predictions.

Class management: individual/pair work whole class activity
Timing: 3’
Activity 3 – Pre-reading
General competence: to understand written messages
Specific competence: to identify the meaning of words in context
Method: dialogue
Procedure: The teacher tells Ss that they are going to read the text and they have to try and identify the meaning of some words in context, finding out what parts of speech they are etc.

Activity 4 – While reading 1

Procedure: Ss are asked to read the fragment and then to answer a set of questions about the text.

Procedure: Ss are asked to extract from the text sentences equivalent in meaning with some given statements about the text.

Specific competence: use of the structures to convey meanings in writing

Procedure: Ss are presented the grammar structures used to speculate about the past (must have been, might have been, may have been) and then are given an exercise with these structures.

Evaluation and homework assignment
Ss have to write for the next English class a dialogue between two teenagers complaining to each other about their relationship with their parents.
